Since its opening in 1917, Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles has been a destination for hungry shoppers, offering a delicious array of grocery essentials and prepared food. Grand Central Market has also become something more than a market. Today it’s a gateway to DTLA, a “must see” for tourists, an emblem and engine of downtown’s economic revival, and a socially integrated public space. The Market’s evolution over the decades reflects the changing fortunes and faces of the city at large. West’s talk will illuminate the Market’s century-plus history and examine how Grand Central Market became a gathering place for the cuisines and cultures of Los Angeles.

Kevin West was co-creative director of Grand Central Market during its revival from 2012–2017 under former owner Adele Yellin and is a creative consultant to new owner Adam Daneshgar. He is also co-author of The Grand Central Market Cookbook and author of Saving the Season. In addition, he’s editor at large for Travel + Leisure and a special correspondent for Departures. His boutique consulting shop, Taster, advises chefs, restaurant groups, and real estate developers.
